Inside El Salvador’s Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT)
The Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT) is a maximum security prison located in Tecoluca, El Salvador. The role of a maximum security prison is to accommodate, secure, and restrain individuals deemed the most hazardous offenders. CECOT is one of the world's most secure and largest prisons. It is specifically designed to house El Salvador's most violent gang members. MS-13 and Barrio 18 are among the most notorious and brutal gangs in El Salvador. Gang members are identifiable through tattoos. CECOT was built as part of President Nayib Bukele's aggressive crackdown on organized crime. It represents a new era in the fight against gang violence. The following are factors enhanced in CECOT center.
Advanced Security Framework
CECOT is equipped with modern surveillance systems, high walls, and reinforced cells to prevent escapes or riots. The center is enclosed by dual electrified fences and reinforced concrete walls, with security enforced by 19 watch towers. Security forces are on duty around the clock and monitor inmates' movements and interactions.
Mass Incarceration Approach
CECOT prison was designed to accommodate tens of thousands of criminals, in line with El Salvador's hard-line anti-gang policies. CECOT's huge capacity allows authorities to isolate criminal networks and drastically reduce gang activity nationwide. In addition, CECOT forbids relatives to visit the prisoners.
Rigid Inmate Regulations
At CECOT, life inside is highly controlled and prisoners have very little freedom. Conditions inside CECOT are harsh in an effort to cut off all contact with the outside world leading to gangs dismantling. Prisoners lie on bare metal bunks without mattresses and sheets. Moreover, notorious prisoners are subjected to solitary confinement. Besides, prisoners have two sinks to wash in and two toilets. Inmates use them in plain sight of everyone else.
Conclusion
CECOT has become a key figure in El Salvador's war on crime, attracting both praise and criticism. People have viewed CECOT as a necessary response to a crisis as well as a controversial policy. However, it has become a key component of security policies.
